Russian Ministry of Transport has decided to construct a new runway in Domodedovo

According to the official statement of Ministry of Transport of Russian Federation from May 25th 2011, the decision has been taken to build a new runway at Moscow Domodedovo airport. AEX.ru

The new runway will be constructed in exchange for the existing Runway 2, which is to be taken out of service in 2015.

The specified decision, taken in accordance with instruction of Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation issued following the results of the meeting “On development of Moscow Transportation Hub” from March 28th 2011, underlines the importance of Moscow Domodedovo airport’s development as one of the largest traffic centers in Russia and the largest airport in Eastern Europe.

The new runway will be placed 1800 m to the East from the existing Runway 2. According to the assessment of Ministry of Transport, the airport’s capacity will increase up to 50 million passengers a year after the construction is finished. Moscow Aviation Cluster’s capacity will increase up to 110 million passengers a year. Domodedovo has serviced around 22,3 million passengers in 2010.

Domodedovo airport is obliged to finance several types of work connected with the preparation of the ground for construction of federal object in the framework of private-public partnership.
