Sheremetyevo International Airport (SIA) has started the construction of new multi-modal cargo hub. The facility fully complies with the international standards of cargo handling and it will be opened in late 2012, the airport reports. AEX.ru
In future the cargo hub created on the basis of Sheremetyevo international airport will become the leading cargo complex in Eastern Europe. The project is being implemented in cooperation with AirBridgeCargo (forming part of Volga-Dnepr Group).
Sheremetyevo-Cargo, a subsidiary of SIA, Kratos Corporation and Interros Company are carrying out work on project’s realization. The InzhStroyExpert Company is the general designer and Lufthansa Consulting has been selected as a consultant.
Lufthansa Consulting develops the concept as-built drawing of the territory allocated for construction of new cargo terminal and all the necessary infrastructure. The consultants are also developing proposals regarding the optimization of cargo handling system on the basis of calculated traffic. Following the results of this analysis the terminal’s project will be finalized and presented. The project includes implementation of lines for servicing transport and cargo traffic and working procedures for handling of different types of cargo. In addition, Lufthansa Consulting will develop an IT-organization and evaluate the concept of protection.
The area of new cargo hub is 20000 square meters. All the necessary conditions for sending ad recieveing cargo will be created there. The hub’s infrastructure will include zones for cargo storing and handling, zones for servicing clients and some areas are intended for offices of airlines, their agents and other companies.
Thus, the SIA plans to increase cargo traffic to 1 million tons a year by 2030, taking into account the future construction of the airport’s third runway and opening of the second summer zone. Following the results of 2010 the airport’s cargo traffic was 280 thousand tons.
