Ministry of Defense of Russia plans to acquire surface-to-air missile systems S-500

According to Lenta.ru, the State program in the area of arms for the period of 2011-2020 includes the acquisition of ten surface-to-air missile systems S-500 to replace S-400 which is currently used. This fact has been announced by the Principal Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Vladimir Popovkin. As explained by Popovkin, the testing of S-500 will start in 2015.

"At first the missiles of this missile system will be based on S-400", - Popovkin said. He also noted that S-500 will become the base of a new aerospace defense and missile system S-400 will also be a part of it. It is planned to acquire 56 S-400 missile systems by 2020. Commander-In-Chief of the Russian air forces Colonel General Alexander Zelin said in July 2010 that S-500, developed by "Almaz-Antey", will become the major component of a new antimissile defense.

The development of S-500 was made public in 2009. According to expectations, the development of this new missile system will have been finished by 2012. As explained by Commander of operational-strategic headquarters of aerospace defense lieutenant general Valery Ivanov, serial production of S-500 will be started in 2014. The details regarding new missile system are yet unknown. It has been reported earlier that S-500 will be more compact and maneuverable, than S-400 and will excel it in the ability to drive off enemy air.

Representative of Ministry of Defense press service and information department Colonel Vladimir Drik said that anti-aircraft missile troops of Russia will be completely renewed in the next ten years. According to Drik, the acquisition of new weapons will be started in 2011 and the part of new weapons in operational inventory will have reached 100% by 2020. New weapons and equipment will help anti-aircraft missile troops increase their efficiency.
