Ryanair says it is talking to Russian and Chinese manufacturers on their new jetliners in a search for a suitable 199-seater.
Earlier the low-cost carrier considered larger members of the Boeing 737NG family: they spoke of the -900ER model as somewhat oversized and favoured 737-800. Talks were ongoing on a hefty order for as much as two hundred airframes. But for some reason Ryanair postponed a decision for some point in future.
Now, with the Tu-204SM flying, and more advanced MS-21 and C919 on the horizon, the airline is understood to have been looking at these designs as well. "There is no detailed engagement at the moment. We are talking to everybody - the Russians and the Chinese as well", Ryanair deputy CEO Michael Cawley is quoted as saying. He carried on that these alternatives may prove a viable option: "Why wouldn't we? At the right price it makes perfect sense to buy, so long as it is fuel efficient. We are not wedded to any aircraft manufacturer."
Earlier Ryanair officials said they found out that a 199-seater aircraft would best fit into the airline’s fleet renewal plans. "We think we could still do our turnarounds in 25 minutes with 199 passengers. If someone made this aircraft, we would operate it," a Ryanair officials was quoted as saying.
