The Indian air force is planning to acquire 250 Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) for some US dollar 25 billion.
Comparing the FGFA effort to the US-led program of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II next generation fighter, a source in the Indian ministry of defense said the Russo-Indian fighters will be less expensive to buy. When the FGFA production is up and running, one aircraft going to Indian air force will cost it about US dollar 100 million. This compares to US dollar 109.4 to 142.9 million, depending on version, for a series example of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
Besides, through the collaborative effort with Moscow, New Delhi will get access to all of the technologies embedded in the FGFA. According to the agreement signed on 21 December 2010, New Delhi and Moscow will equally share FGFA technologies and intellectual property on this aircraft design.
