The Command of Russian Long-Range Aviation has issued the request for proposal on development of Prospective Air Complex for Long Range Aviation (PAK DA). According to Lenta.ru, it has been declared by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Long-range aviation, Major General, Anatoly Zhikharev. According to him, the first PAK DA prototype will be ready by 2020 and the new bomber will be put into operation by Russian air forces in 2025.
"We would like this jet to have a brand-new navigation target acquisition system, communication equipment, reconnaissance assets and electronic warfare. It should be capable of using all the existing and prospective types of armament from the inventory of Long-range aviation", - said Zhikharev. He also noted that the new aircraft should be developed using stealth technology. It is expected the military-industrial complex should submit avant-project of the new aircraft for approval in 2012.
It has been reported earlier that the first prototype of PAK DA will be created in 2025 or later. The estimated duration of this program was 15-20 years. Vladimir Popvkin, ex-First Deputy Minister of Defense, said on February 24th 2011 that the funding for development of the new aircraft has been included in the State program in the area of arms for 2011-2020. The total scope of finance for the State program is 23 trillion rubles.
It is known that Tupolev Company, which has signed the contract on performance of research-and-development activities in August 2009, is working on development the next-generation bomber. The duration of this contract is three years. It is also known that PAK DA will be a brand-new aircraft, not a modernization of Tu-160 bomber. PAK DA will replace all the Tu-95MS and Tu-160 aircraft in future.
