Joint Staff of Russian armed forces states hopes that parity in the area of GLONASS and GPS navigational systems accuracy will be achieved by 2015 by means of space geodetic system, which is being developed in Russia, RIA Novosti reports with reference to head of Directorate of Military Survey of the Joint Staff of Russian armed forces, rear-admiral Sergey Kozlov.
The survey service of Russian armed forces has been working on the improvement of GLONASS system’s accuracy since 2003. At present the service has a network of ground observation points for monitoring of GLONASS system, but the Russian military count on development of the geodetic system’s space sector.
"In future we plan to create a parity of our national GLONASS navigation system with GPS and other foreign systems being created in the area of accuracy by using target information obtained from the vehicles of space geodetic system", - Kozlov said.
He also noted that a space geodetic system, “which will help significantly improve the accuracy characteristics of GLONASS system and increase the accuracy of weapon employment and usage of military equipment” is being developed in Russia.
According to the head of Directorate of Military Survey of the Joint Staff of Russian armed forces, work connected with geodetic support of GLONASS system is being performed by the specialists of the service using funds from the budget of Russian Ministry of Defense.
"Russian Ministry of Defense has its own expense item in the Federal Target Program “Global Navigational System (2011-2020)", - Kozlov said.
GLONASS system is intended for tactical navigational-time provision of unlimited number of ground, naval, air and space basing. The system has been put into operation in 1993. The access to the civil navigational signals of GLONASS system is provided to Russian and foreign customers all over the world for free and without any limitations.
