Peruvian Ministry of Defense has completed the acceptance of three last Russian Mi-171Sh military transport helicopters, acquired in the network of agreement with Rosoboronexport signed on July 23rd 2010. It has been reported by Lenta.ru with reference to Infodefensa.
The contract has assumed delivery of 8 helicopters: six Mi-171Shs and two Mi-35P. Mi-35Ps have been delivered to Peruvian air forces in April 2011 and the first three Mi-171Shs – in May. The total value of the agreement is assessed at $107,9 million.
The contract also includes delivery of maintenance equipment for Mi-171Sh and training of Peruvian pilots by Russian specialists.
Ministry of Defense intends to use these vehicles to fight drug traffic and extremists from Sendero Luminoso faction in the river-valley of Apurimac and Ene.
Military transport Mi-171 helicopter has a maximum flight speed of 250 km/h and is able to transport up to 24 passengers for a distance up to 590 km. Mi-171 helicopters are widely used in combat operations worldwide and are known for their high reliability, simplicity of maintenance and relatively low prices. Mi-171Sh version is operated by several NATO countries.
At present Peruvian Ministry of Defense is carrying out program of national air forces’ fleet modernization, which is mostly formed by vehicles manufactured by USSR. It is planned to renew a total of 70 helicopters, 21 fighters, 50 bombers and strike fighters.
