Avianova low-cost carrier announced selection of Krasnodar city airport in the role of it second hub.

The decision was announced at a press conference on Wednesday. Avianova invited local media to the Krasnodar city airport to bring this news. The decision was made a day before during meeting with leaders of Basel Aero, an airport arm of the Basic Element. The latter structure is controlled by Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch.

The Krasnodar city airport will house a comprehensive technical base. It would be staffed by Avianova maintainers and engineers. The airline plans to move in here in May 2011 and fly out of Krasnodar to seven Russian destinations. International services are being considered for a more distant future.

That said, Avianova will continue to focus on domestic services, whose share will continue to stay at 99%, according to the airline’s general director Vladimir Gorbunov. He added that some of the airline flight crews will move from Moscow to Krasnodar and new formed in the Krasnodar region.

In its turn, Basel Aero welcomed Avianova to Krasnodar, saying that “technologies of our companies fit in one another”. In particular, provision is made in the Basic Element’s airports for aircraft turnaround within 30 minutes. This makes them suitable for low cost carriers, along with Pulkovo airport of St. Petersburg and Khrabrovo of Kaliningrad, currently the most popular destinations for the discounters.
