Stretched Superjet to be decided by Paris airshow 2011

Sukhoi and its shareholder Alenia will make a decision on a stretched version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) by the airshow in Paris opening in June 2011.

The stretch version seating 130 passengers, tentatively designated SSJ130, have been considered since 2005, when Sukhoi made decision to develop the SSJ100 with nearly 100 seats as the baseline model. A 75-seat variant had been considered in that role before. Sukhoi declared its intent to develop a 75 seat jet under designation “Russian Regional Jet” back in 2001.

Leaders of Superjet International (SJI), a joint venture between Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) and Alenia, were quoted as saying that the stretched version will be more interesting to low cost carriers. The SSJ100 is somewhat undersized for them, they added. SJI CEO Carlo Logli said the manufacturer is "passing through a review of the product family", but is "more interested in a stretched version than a shrunk version". He expects a decision by the time of the Paris air show.

Although a 75 seater is still being considered by Sukhoi, it is unlikely to come into existence due to overweight problems with the baseline version. Much rather, Sukhoi must be interested in producing a larger version of the baseline aircraft: the stretch is easier to develop with passing parameters in the view of the structural weight excesses in the SSJ100.

The SSJ130 is often discussed in a connection with the Superjet New Generation (SSJ NG) effort. The latter would represent redeveloped aircraft with larger wing and new engines with a higher thrust (such as Russia’s Perm PD-14) as compared to the PowerJet SaM146 currently powering the SSJ100.
