Moscow Domodedovo suffers from bad weather, heavy snowfall and electricity blackout.

The worse happened when the power lines to the airport were cut in the morning of 26 December, at 07:30. At once, Domodedovo lost all of its electrical power and temporarily ceased operations. Further distraction to passengers was the fact that commuter trains linking the airport with Moscow Paveletsky Railway Terminal were temporarily cancelled.

The blackout occurred due to extensive icing of the feeding power lines, with substance amassing to such an extent that it was heavy enough to torn the wires apart. This happened to power stations in the village of Volodarsky and city of Podolsk. These two generating facilities are the main sources of electricity for Domodedovo.

Although the airport did have five diesel generators, and more were brought in during Sunday, it took time to activate those before key airport systems got functioning again. With that achieved, the airport served a number of flights, with the airplanes departing when natural light conditional allowed. According to Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya, about eight thousand passengers could not board their flights as of Sunday evening, December 26. Over one hundred flights were delayed past weekend. Some of the flights bound to Domodedovo were diverted to Sheremetievo and Vnukovo.

Using internal power sources, Domodedovo dispatched some of the delayed flights, with check-in and luggage loading operations performed in manual modes. According to the airport press service, this past Sunday a total of 106 outbound and 87 inbound flights were served. Runways were kept clean of ice and snow.

By the morning of Monday December 27 the power supply to Domodedovo was restored and commuter trains restarted services. However, the airport needs time to completely recover from the blackout, and put all of its systems into normal operating modes.
