The second operable prototype of Sukhoi T-50 next generation fighter aircraft will fly in early 2011, according to Aleksey Fedorov, president of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC).
Fedorov informed the media about this postponement while he was accompanying Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on this official tour to New Delhi 20-22 December.
The T-50 is Sukhois’ inner designation for the PAKFA, Russian acronym for Future Aviation Complex of Frontal Aviation. Second and third operable prototypes of this aircraft were to fly by the end of this year, about which Aleksei Fedorov said on the eve of Farnborough air show in July 2010. Sukhoi intends to fly four T-50 prototypes as part of the airplane’s flight tests.
According to the estimations made by the Indian partners, the whole program may take US dollar 8-10 billion. The T-50 shall be the major type in service with the Russian air force’s Frontal Aviation units. The service has a requirement for 250-300 new-generation tactical fighters. The Indian air force has a requirement for 200-250 FGFA, the Indian version of T-50.
