The Italian flag carrier has selected the Brazilian manufacturer over its Russian rival contrary to “leaks” in the press about that occurred past summer about Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) winning the competition.
Reuters reported about the Italian carrier’s selection of Embraer. Alitalia CEO Rocco Sabelli was quoted as saying that the main cause for turning down Sukhoi’s proposal was the fact that the Russian airplane is yet to pass certification with Russian and European civil aviation authorities. Earlier expected deal between Alitalia and Sukhoi was estimated at US dollar 500 million. But as it stands now Alitalia will take 20 Brazilian aircraft instead of 20-24 SSJ100s.
Initially, Sukhoi was a favored supplier, after the Italian aerospace structures acquired a large stake in Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC) in 2007. Alenia Aeronautica bought 25% of SCAC shares. Besides, Alenia and Sukhoi established Superjet International joint venture. They hold 51% and 49% in it respectively.
Since launch of the SSJ100 program, the Russian government has been rendering every support to the Superjet and its maker in a hope that this project will help the ailing Russian aviation industry recover and take a niche in the global market for passenger jetliners. The SSJ100 is meant to replace the aged Tupolev Tu-134 and Yakovlev Yak-42. SSJ100 prototype first flew in May 2008. Restricted certification by Russian aviation authorities is expected by the end of this year.
