Testing complete on Su-25UBM attack aircraft

Sukhoi has completed state acceptance trials on the Su-25UBM twin seat attack aircraft and operational trainer. The trials included actual weapons firing.

The aircraft has undergone all necessary testing making it possible to enter service with the Russian air force, according to Vladimir Babak, general director of Sukhoi Attack Aircraft. Some work on preparation of proving documentation is yet to be done, he confessed. This work shall be rendered complete after the Su-25UBM wins Act on completion of the state acceptance trials. This will enable series production of the aircraft and its deliveries to the Russian air force.

The Su-25UBM is a deep modification of the Su-25 twin seat operational trainer. The new aircraft can fly nocturnal ground attack missions in any weathers, and can also be used as trainer. The UBM features new set of onboard equipment that, among other things, enables the airplane’s use as reconnaissance aircraft, target designator and control post.

Maiden flight for the Su-25UBM occurred on 6 December 2008. Although Sukhoi does not reveal much technical information on the new aircraft, it is known that it has the Kopyo radar from Phazotron NIIR and the Bars-2 set of onboard equipment. It may also have self-protection system against missiles with infrared homing. The Su-25UBM can develop high subsonic speed and has a range of up to 1300 km.
