R&D on next general turbofan estimated at Rouble 70 billion

The PD-14 indigenous engine for the Irkut MS-21 next-generation narrowbody airlifter requires Rouble 70 billion to be developed and put into mass production.

This estimation was given by Aleksandr Inozemtsev, executive director and general designer at Aviadvigatel, the Perm-based company that develops the engine. Inozemtsev attributes the PD-14 to fifth generation of jet engines for commercial aviation.

The Russian government has agreed to provide Rouble 35 billion. The reminder is to come from the industry and outside investors. It is a standard practice of the Russian government to provide half of requisite funds for long-term aviation programs and demand other half to be raised commercially.

Minister for industry and trade Victor Khristenko was quoted as saying that the Russian government will render support to the PD-14 project so as to have the engine certified by the end of 2013.

The governmental funds will cover development costs of all major engine parts and modules, and associated technologies, as well certification in Russia and the west. Inozemtsev further said Aviadvigatel will have to raise Rouble 35 billion using its own capabilities, as he doubts that outside investors could be easily found to share this expense. This money is necessary for setting up manufacturing line, and doing other preparatory work to enable PD-14 mass production.
