Traveling with Rostec: Ufa
Wednesday July 7, 2021 11:31 MSK / Rostec
Rostec State Corporation is one of the largest industrial companies in Russia. Today the Corporation unites hundreds of organizations located in many cities of our country. Rostec enterprises are often city-forming, and some Russian cities have gained worldwide fame thanks to the Corporation's developments. Another story from the section "Traveling with Rostec" is dedicated to the capital of Bashkiria - Ufa.

During its long history, the city managed to accumulate a rich heritage, acquire many cultural monuments. In addition, Ufa is a large industrial center - there are about 200 enterprises, including many "Rostec" ones. The capital of Bashkiria produces engines for modern aircraft, produces the latest vaccines against deadly diseases, and creates equipment for spaceships.

Ufa engines of progress

The Ufa Engine-Building Production Association (UEC-UMPO) is an enterprise with a long history. The plant, which began its work with the production of harvester motors, later changed its profile to the production of motors for aviation. Power plants produced at this Ufa plant raised about 170 types and modifications of aircraft into the sky. Among them - the most massive third-generation fighter MiG-21, fighter-bomber MiG-27, interceptor Su-22, attack aircraft Su-25. Since the beginning of the 1980s, UMPO has been producing one of the world's best engines for front-line aviation - the AL-31F for Su-27 fighters and its modifications.

Today, UEC-UMPO is part of the United Engine Corporation of Rostec and participates in almost all major projects of the domestic aircraft engine building. The Ufa enterprise is working on promising engines for the fifth generation Su-57 fighters, working on the PD-14 project for the MC-21 aircraft, and producing components for VK-2500 helicopter engines.

Last year, on the basis of UEC-UMPO, a new center for the production of helicopter engine units with a capacity of up to 350 engine sets per year was opened. This is the first specialized production of this scale in Russia. It will produce units for serial and advanced helicopter engines: VK-2500, TV3-117, VK-650V, VK-1600V, including for helicopters of the Mi-8/17 family, attack Mi-28 and Ka-52, as well as multipurpose Ka-226T and Ka-62.

In addition, on the basis of UEC-UMPO, the Production and Training Center of the Aviation Cluster of Rostec State Corporation is being created - a separate building with an area of 14.5 thousand square meters, which will house 150 units of training equipment. Annually, about 2 thousand specialists will graduate from the Center, who will be in demand not only at UEC-UMPO, but also at other Rostec enterprises in Bashkortostan.

"Molniya" ignites

If in "ODK-UMPO" engines are produced, then in Joint Stock Company "Ufa Scientific and Production Enterprise "Molniya" they "add spark" to the engines - the enterprise occupies 95% of the Russian market in the development of ignition systems for aircraft engines.

Joint Stock Company "Ufa Scientific and Production Enterprise "Molniya" is a part of the Technodinamika holding. The history of the enterprise on the Bashkir land has eight decades - in 1941 the plant was evacuated to Ufa. In wartime, they produced candles for piston engines of aircraft. In the 1950s, the first electronic automation products appeared, in the next decade - electronic equipment for regulating engines using control on-board computers, and in the 1980s, the company's specialists created the first domestic on-board embedded micro-computer.

Today, the products developed by "Molniya" have found their application on almost all domestic aircraft and helicopters, as well as on the aircraft of the countries of far and near abroad. The enterprise is developing an ignition system for the PD-35 high-thrust engine, and the production of a similar system for the PD-14 has already been mastered in series.

The development of new types of products is also ongoing. The enterprise has developed, certified and launched a series of electronic control and monitoring equipment for the sustainer and auxiliary engines of the Yak-130 combat trainer and the Be-200 amphibious aircraft, Ka-52, Ka-31, Mi-8 helicopters and their modifications.

Guarding national immunity

Last year, one of the leading scientific and industrial complexes of Russia for the development and production of immunobiological drugs, the Ufa "Immunopreparat", celebrated its 115th anniversary. Today the enterprise is a branch of NPO Microgen (under the management of the Natsimbio holding).

The working biography of the enterprise began with the creation of the Pasteur station, in the staff of which there were only five people. In Ufa, the production of smallpox detritus was started, and in 1907 the production of anti-diphtheria and anti-scarlet fever serum. The production expanded year after year, its true heyday fell on the 1930s - it was at this time that the production of bacterial preparations at the institute was brought to a new, higher quality level. This made it possible during the war years to organize the production of vaccines and bacteriophages, which were vital for the front. Thanks to the work of Ufa microbiologists, it was possible to prevent an "epidemic fire", which saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Today the company produces vaccines for use within the framework of the National Calendar of Preventive Vaccinations. Vaccine production continues to modernize - new divisions and production sites have been created. This year, it is at the site of the Ufa "Immunopreparat" that the production of the newest Russian vaccine - the drug "MeningoVac A + C" for the prevention of meningococcal infection, will begin. A year earlier, the first in Russia Biological Resource Center for the study of bacteriophages was launched here. The center is a repository of a unique collection of microorganisms from more than 10 thousand strains of bacteriophages, which will be used in the design of topical, clinically effective and safe drugs.

From Ufa to space and back

The Ufa Instrument Engineering Production Association (UPPO) celebrates its 65th anniversary this year. Today the enterprise is part of KRET and specializes in the serial production of onboard equipment, including autopilots, control systems and other products for the aviation industry. Ufa produces about a third of all computers for control systems for Russian aviation. Also, the UPPO mastered the production of oil and gas equipment: pneumatic drives with a jet engine.

In the history of the enterprise there is a place for space successes. In the mid-1960s, Ufa produced control units for spacecraft and the Mir orbital station. Perhaps one of the most unusual space orders for UPPO specialists came in 1971 - the creation of the first electric razor for astronauts.

Electric shaver "Agidel-K"

It is very difficult to use an ordinary razor in space - the main problem lies not in the absence of a conventional 220V network, but in the absence of gravity. The Agidel-K electric shaver was created by Ufa specialists as a result of joint work with spacecraft designers. In addition to being powered from the 27V on-board network, it received a built-in micro-vacuum cleaner. Soviet cosmonauts Pavel Popovich and Yuri Artyukhin were the first to appreciate the quality of an electric shaver - they voiced their positive feedback to the whole world right from orbit. Later, more than one generation of Soviet cosmonauts used this space gadget from Ufa. Meanwhile, the Agidel electric shaver has a rich history on Earth - this Ufa brand is well known, especially to the older generation of Russians.
