New international terminal has been opened at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport
Monday January 27, 2020 19:59 MSK / Roman Gusarov
On January 17, 2020, Sheremetyevo International Airport was put into commercial operation a new passenger terminal built and equipped to the highest international standards. The first to appreciate the advantages, comfort and design of a technological airport terminal were passengers of the flight SU 2203 Helsinki-Moscow of Aeroflot airline.

Passenger Terminal C was built as part of the Long-Term Development Program of the IASH and is part of the Northern Terminal Complex (Terminals B, C) of Sheremetyevo Airport. Investments in the construction projects of Terminal C and parking amounted to 32 billion rubles. Terminal C is a large and beautiful modern airport complex with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, which consists of: the main 7-story terminal building with a total area of 127,375 sq. m, apron, towers for ground control of aircraft and indoor six-level parking for 2500 cars, connected to the terminal by a pedestrian gallery. Given the new, third runway, commissioned in 2019, the capacity of the entire airport increased to 80 million passengers a year. Thus, the Sheremetyevo Airport with six terminals is the largest air terminal complex in Russia. With the commissioning of Runway-3 and Terminal C, Sheremetyevo strengthened its position among the largest advanced hubs in Europe in terms of capacity and manufacturability.

The new Terminal C has been merged with Terminal B. The docking of buildings “under one roof” has become one of the most complex construction features. The unity of buildings allows passengers to use the service and technical capabilities of two terminals at once, and transfer passengers to move between terminals through the transit zone in a minimum amount of time. The new construction will allow redistributing the load between the airport terminals and provide a higher level of comfort for passengers and airlines, thereby attracting additional transfer flows and enhancing the competitiveness of MASH in the domestic and international markets.

The official opening of the new terminal took place with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation A.A. Yurchik, Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency A.V. Neradko, Chairman of the Moscow Regional Duma I.Yu. Bryntsalov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC "MASH" A.A. Ponomarenko, General Director of JSC "MASH" M.M. Vasilenko, Deputy General Director for Commerce and Finance of PJSC Aeroflot A.Yu. Chikhanchin, other officials, partners of the MASH Group of Companies, representatives of international and Russian media.

Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Alexander Yurchik: “Recently, Sheremetyevo has been a leader in the development of airport infrastructure in our country, Europe and the world. The airport and its base carrier Aeroflot are the flagships of the aviation industry. This is a very necessary and important symbiosis ... I want to draw attention to the fact that the development of Sheremetyevo Airport is based on public-private partnerships ... The new terminal combines high technology with the ideas of constructivism, and this once again gives us reason to be proud of our historical and cultural heritage . Moreover, the airport bears the proud name of the great Russian poet Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin ... Once again I want to thank those who gave a piece of their energy, vitality to the construction of this terminal, and those who implemented it so effectively. I want to congratulate the airport management and investors on the successful implementation of the construction of the terminal.”

Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) Alexander Neradko: “I want to congratulate everyone on the completion of the next, but not the last stage of development of the country's main air harbour - Sheremetyevo International Airport. Last year, more than 221 million passengers visited airports in the Russian Federation. You can imagine that this is already more than the population of our country. Our airports have become, figuratively speaking, small and large cities that transport more and more aircraft passengers. Citizens of our country and guests of the Russian Federation are accustomed to using the most convenient and comfortable mode of transport by air. And of these 221 million passengers, almost 50 million were served at Sheremetyevo Airport ... The opening of terminal C does not coincide with any event, as it was at other airports - for Sochi 2014 or the 2018 World Cup. The airport team and investors decided to make such a significant contribution to the development of the airport based on an analysis of the development of passenger traffic. Thanks to them for that. Thank you very much to the government of the Moscow region and, of course, the country's leadership, for their support and participation in the implementation of that large-scale project.”

Chairman of the Board of Directors of MASH JSC Alexander Ponomarenko: “The commissioning of the terminal is an important step in the long-term development program of the airport. Our own investments in Terminal C amounted to 32 billion rubles (500 million US dollars). As a result, the new terminal will increase the capacity of the airport to 80 million passengers annually. This is a significant step in achieving our strategic goal - to serve 100 million passengers a year by 2030. Prior to that, we built and commissioned Terminal B, two tunnels (passenger and baggage) connecting the northern and southern terminal complexes, as well as the largest cargo terminal and fuelling complex, together with LUKOIL. Our future plans include the construction of the second stage of terminal C. Also, by 2021, our partners, the Russian Railways company, must complete the construction of the Aeroexpress train station, which will allow our passengers to stay in the northern terminal complex without a transfer from the city. Sheremetyevo International Airport today is the largest airport complex in Russia, an important part of the global transport system.”

Mikhail Vasilenko, General Director of MASH JSC: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who came to share this holiday with us. Thank you for sharing our satisfaction and our joy that we are commissioning a new Terminal C of Sheremetyevo Airport. Today we will tell and show you what terminal it is, how innovative, multi-functional and beautiful it is. Our task is to create high-quality and comfortable conditions for passengers here. This is a task in the implementation of which our partners help us. And only thanks to their work, their efforts, we managed to build and put into operation such a beautiful terminal.”

The design and construction of the latest terminal at Sheremetyevo International Airport lasted 33 months - from April 2017 to January 2020. Energo-Stroy LLC acted as general contractor and designer. The development of the architectural and functional concept was carried out by the Serbian branch of the international architectural bureau RMJM. It is based on the richest traditions of Russian constructivism, by analogy and in continuation of the stylistic decisions of Terminal B. At the concept stage, the total area of Terminal C was 116,465 sq. m. However, in the process of further work, it became clear that these areas are not enough - and they were increased at the stages of development of design and working documentation to 127,375 sq. m.
