New objects of Sheremetyevo Airport to the 2018 FIFA World Cup
Monday June 18, 2018 13:06 MSK / Mikhail Vakhneev
Sheremetyevo Airport presented a new transport infrastructure built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The constructed infrastructure of the airport opens up new opportunities for passengers and expands the range of services presented to passengers not only by the airport itself, but also by airlines. Currently, Sheremetyevo is implementing a large-scale long-term development program, which was designed before 2026. The volume of investments in development projects for this period will reach $ 2,565 billion. The most important stage of the program is the preparation of the airport for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The main new infrastructure of Sheremetyevo is undoubtedly the Inter-terminal passage, a tunnel connecting the southern and northern parts of the airport. This is a unique project, because for the first time in Russia, directly under the running runways of the airport, two kilometres of tunnels were laid, along which passenger and baggage traffic between the terminals will be carried out.

The inter-terminal passage includes passenger and luggage tunnels with a length of 1,936 meters each and two station complexes. The project combined all passenger terminals (B, C, D, E, F) of the Sheremetyevo airport complex into a single unit "under one roof" and is capable of providing efficient transportation - 11.1 million passengers and 5.9 million pieces of baggage per year. Total investment in the creation of the Inter-terminal passage amounted to $ 235 million.

Passenger transportations are carried out by two automated trains on cable rope made by Doppelmayr and consist of 4 cars, each of which accommodates up to 27 passengers.

According to the representatives of the airport, if there is an increase in passenger traffic, it is possible to install an additional fifth car. The expediency of installing another car, according to the representatives of the airport, will be clear during the next 2 years of operation. The journey time between the remote Sheremetyevo terminals is 4 minutes.

In this case, the tunnel provides a guaranteed minimum docking time (up to 50 minutes) and allows for faster transfer of passengers between terminals. This is especially important for the organisation of effective hub operations of Sheremetyevo's basic carrier Aeroflot.

The descent to the Inter-terminal passage station in the southern sector of the airport is in the gallery connecting the Aeroexpress terminal, the exits to terminals E and F and terminal D in the so-called dirty area of the airport. After descending several flights down the stairs, on an elevator or escalator the passenger gets to the station itself. It is comfortably lit, with informational plaques in Russian, English and Chinese. On the edges of the station there is a cable car for trains.

In order to prevent falling onto rails and ropes, and also in order to prevent people from finding themselves in the closed service spaces between the apron and trains, a solid glass enclosure with automatic doors that open simultaneously with the doors of wagons is installed. A similar system is at some metro stations in St. Petersburg. Small cars have one door each, while the doors are quite spacious and allow easy passage for passengers with luggage.

Passengers also come here. For the station are divided into two parts ("dirty" and "clean"). One train car stops in a sterile zone, which allows transfer passengers, while moving between the northern and southern areas of the airport, to remain in the "clean" zone, and to avoid additional inspection, which in turn facilitates the transit of passengers.

In parallel with the passenger traffic, the transportation of baggage is organised through the tunnel. In a special tunnel, on a two-level magnetic-induction road, on special trolleys, passengers' luggage is quickly transported between the southern and northern zones of the airport.

In total, 180 trolleys for outerwear are used for transportation and about the same for oversized luggage. Trolleys develop a speed of up to 8 meters per second. Thus, they travel all the way in a time of about 4 minutes 20 seconds, considering the acceleration after the station and the braking in front of the station.

In the northern zone of the airport, the station and luggage and sorting center are located in the newly opened Terminal B. The baggage system is designed to carry transit baggage up to 20 million passengers per year.

The baggage handling system is fully automated and the person only carries out its control, as well as the delivery of baggage to the aircraft. In addition, the luggage compartment has a storage room for 1500 seats, which allows you to easily service transfer passengers with a long transplant time.

During the press tour, the airport's infrastructure facilities Sheremetyevo were visited by the Governor of the Moscow Region Andrey Vorobyov. He was presented with new infrastructure facilities built for the World Cup. Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC "SIA" Alexander Ponomarenko and General Director of JSC "SIA" Mikhail Vasilenko held for the head of the Moscow region a presentation of the newest Terminal B and Inter-terminal passage.

Also, the governor was presented with long-term development plans: at present, the construction (reconstruction) of the first stage of the new Terminal C with an area of 116,000 sq. m with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, which will be opened in 2019 and integrated with Terminal B into a single North Terminal Complex.

In preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Sheremetyevo completed the construction and commissioned a passenger terminal B with an area of 110,500 sq. m with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year. The architecture and design of the new terminal are made in the aesthetics of Russian constructivism.

In the external appearance and interiors, emphasis is placed on the works of Russian avant-garde artists of the early XX century - Lyubov Popova and Varvara Stepanova, the motifs of works by El Lisitsky and Alexander Rodchenko are widely used. The accent in the interior is made on large-format 3D panels, which show symbolic visual images and sights of Russia.

In Terminal B, there are 64 check-in desks for passengers, including 16 racks with the possibility of self-check-in. The terminal also houses the VIP-hall and business halls "Rublev", "Kandinsky", which, according to experts, are among the best in Europe. The design of their interiors also used elements of Russian artistic and architectural heritage.

"Sheremetyevo is developing, and in the near future more than $ 1.2 billion will be invested here. More than 12,000 people work at the airport. Passenger traffic every year is growing. Increase by almost 5 million passengers per year. This year Sheremetyevo will transport 40 million passengers. We use the most modern technologies, and in construction, and in technologies, and in service for passengers. Passengers have very positive impressions of how the new terminal works. It is very pleasant that the management company is going to continue investing in the development of the airport. In turn, according to the state program of development of the Moscow transport hub, we have completed the reconstruction of Starosheremetevskoye highway - this is also a big investment. I very much hope that Sheremetyevo, Aeroflot and other companies that work here will provide the highest quality services. We are on the threshold of the World Cup. A large number of tourists from Russia and around the world will come to us. I think that what we did at Sheremetyevo deserves respect. In fact, now the passenger traffic can double. For Moscow Region it is a strategically important investment, it is an opportunity to increase its economic potential, "said the Governor of the Moscow Region Andrei Vorobyov.

In turn, the general director of Sheremetyevo airport Mikhail Vasilenko shared his plans for the future development of the airport: "After the completion of the construction and opening of Terminal B, the airport's capacity is 55 million passengers per year. In the terminal there is a more comfortable environment, a more comfortable waiting for the flight, passengers' rest, shops and cafes. Next on the plans will be the creation of the second stage of Terminal C. Then in 2021 we will put on the reconstruction of Terminal F. In order to put it on the reconstruction, we must first create all the conditions for servicing the passengers, so that there is an area in which they could safely accommodate . By the time the reconstruction of Terminal F begins, the second stage of Terminal C has to be built. The duration of the reconstruction will depend on the design decisions, but will not be less than a year. After that, the total throughput of Sheremetyevo will reach 80 million people a year. "

According to Sheremetyevo, the total amount of the airport's own investments in development projects for the World Cup was $ 722 million. By 2018 World Cup, a new terminal B has been commissioned for 20 million passengers per year, inter-terminal passage with passenger and luggage tunnels and two stations, the third alternative refuelling complex with a capacity of up to 1.2 million tons of aviation fuel per year. Also, in 2017, a modern automated cargo complex was put into commercial operation, designed to handle 380 thousand tons of cargo per year. The total investment in development projects until 2026 will reach $ 2,565 billion.

The implementation of development projects will transform Sheremetyevo into a convenient and efficient passenger and cargo hub, a strong competitor of the leading hub airports in Europe and a driver of social and economic progress in Moscow and the Moscow region. The new modern infrastructure of Sheremetyevo Airport will provide additional opportunities to meet and serve high-level participants and guests of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
