Russia's Far East air regiment receives three upgraded MiG-31BM fighter jets

The air regiment based at the Tsentralnaya Uglovaya airfield near Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East has received three upgraded Mikoyan MiG-31BM (NATO reporting name: Foxhound) fighter jets, Russian Eastern Military District spokesman for the Pacific Fleet Captain 2nd Rank Vladimir Matveyev told TASS.

The air regiment’s flight crews have already learnt to operate the planes, Matveyev added.

"The advanced fighter jets are furnished with state-of-the-art airborne equipment. The air regiment has received them as part of its rearmament program," the spokesman said.

"A new-generation avionics suite and advanced weapons have made the MiG-31BM fighter jet two times more effective than the MiG-31 plane," he added.

According to him, the air regiment’s fleet including Sukhoi Su-27SM (Flanker-B) and MiG-31 planes is planned to be fully rearmed with new-generation aircraft.

By early 2016, the air regiment’s flight crews had learnt to operate Su-30SM (Flanker-C) and 4++-generation Su-35S (Flanker-E) multipurpose fighter jets and upgraded MiG-31BM planes. After that, they continued to learn to operate advanced aircraft, Matveyev added.
