Russian Aviaton » Friday August 29, 2014 21:29 MSK

The Federal Air Transport Agency of Russian Federation issued a permit for reconstruction of the runway (Runway No.2) at Domodedovo airport (Moscow). According to the plan of the Federal target investment program, defining the terms and conditions of this project’s financing, the airport will put a new runway into operation in 2016, Domodeovo’s press-service reports.

“The project for reconstruction of Runway No.2 assumes performing construction works without reducing the airport capacity. First of all, a new runway and necessary taxi ways will be constructed at a distance of 287.5 m from the existing Runway No.2. Only after putting the new runway into operation the old one will be closed for reconstruction and further retrofitting of the facility into the high speed taxi way. Domodedovo is the only airport of the Moscow Air Cluster and Russia operating two independent runways allowing using both runways for takeoff and landing simultaneously. This fact will help keep the high airport capacity”, - the press-service explained.

The upcoming reconstruction of the runway will enhance the capabilities of the Domodedovo’s infrastructure: it will allow servicing all types of state-of-the-art aircraft without limitations using both runways, minimizing the time spent at a runway by an airliner and reducing the impact of weather conditions.

“At present, the reconstruction project is at the stage of pre-construction activities, which should be completed in September 2014. At the same time, in the network of another project – “Reconstruction of the second maneuvering area of Domodedovo Airport”, the contractor has started the apron area resurfacing, which will be implemented taking into account the phased commissioning of the reconstructed areas. This will help minimize the impact of these works on the airport procedures. The project will result in improvement of the quality of the apron handling services at Domodedovo Airport”, - the airport noted.

It should be noted that all construction projects implemented at Moscow Domodedovo Airport are aimed at creating the most comfortable conditions for travelers: increasing mobility of citizens of the country is one of the top-priority objectives in the area of air transportation, the press-service added.
