Russia will start deliveries of Mi-171Sh helicopters to Peru in late 2014

The deliveries of Russian-produced Mi-171Sh helicopters to Peru in the network of a contract for delivery of 24 vehicles of the type will be started this year, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to Head of Rosoboronexport’s Air Force Equipment Export Department, Sergey Kornev.

While discussing the possibilities for signing new contracts for delivery of Russian-produced helicopters to Brazil and Venezuela, Kornev noted that export of civil and military helicopters to Latin America is one of the key areas of cooperation with the countries of this region. "For our company Mi-17 Family helicopters are true best-sellers, however, we are also promoting Mi-35M, Mi-28NE and Ka-52 combat helicopters in the region. All these vehicles have a high export potential in Latin America", - he added.

In late 2013 Peruvian Ministry of Defense reported that 24 Mi-171Sh helicopters would be purchased in order to fight illegal drug-traffic. Moreover, the opening of Latin America regional service center, which will provide MRO services to operators of Russian-produced helicopters in the region, is scheduled for 2016. The center will become the major provider of MRO services for operators of Russian-produced helicopters in the region; its further expansion is scheduled for 2018.

According to Kornev, Latin American countries are interested in strengthening their air forces and aircraft industry; in the mid-term it is one of the most promising markets for selling Russian-produced military aircraft.

"In almost all regions there are countries that we still have not established cooperation with (or our cooperation is at its initial stages); however, many of them are interested in purchasing Russian vehicles and weapons. There is no need to rush in this situation, so we must consider a 5-10 years period when discussing new markets or new level of cooperation", - Kornev said.

He added that one way or another Russia’s initial proposals have been submitted to all the potential customers. "We are keeping them updated on our offers. In this context, one of the most promising regions is Latin America: many countries are developing, they are interested in strengthening their air forces and aircraft industry and, most importantly, they have good relations with Russia", - he stated.
