Russia will construct a new aircraft carrier in 5 years

New Russian aircraft carrier will be constructed in 5 years and its development will be started in 2016, Lenta.ru reports. President of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), Roman Trotsenko, has declared this fact. According to him, the construction of the ship will be started in 2018 and it will be completed in 2023. However, Trotsenko did not specify how long will testing and putting the ship into operation will take.

The plans regarding new Russian aircraft carrier’s development and construction have been unveiled in 2009. It has been reported that the ship’s development has already been started and it is carried out by one of USC’s enterprises. Trotsenko did not specify the current status of this project. According to president of USC, the new ship will have an atomic powerplant and its displacement will be around 80 thousand tons. Trotsenko did not declare any further details on the advanced ship.

It has been reported in December 2010, that the construction of four new aircraft carriers will be started in Russia prior to 2020. Later this information has been disposed by Russian Minister of Defense, Anatoly Serdukov, saying that the construction of aircraft carriers has not been planned. Later, the vice-premier of Russia, Sergey Ivanov, stated that the development and construction of aircraft carriers stipulated by the State program in the area of arms for 2011-2020. The program’s amount of finance will be 20 trillion rubles.

At present Russian navy has one aircraft carrier in the inventory - "Soviet Union Fleet Admiral Kuznetsov. 12 Ka-27 helicopters and 33 Su-33 carrier-based fighters are based at this ship. The aircraft carrier’s construction has lasted from September 1982 to 1985 in accordance with 1143.5 "Krechet" project.
