India has purchased an additional batch of Russian Su-30MKI fighters, Lenta.ru reports.

The protocol number two to the intergovernmental agreement (signed in 2000), assuming delivery of additional kits to India for implementation of licensed assembly of 42 Su-30MKIs, has been signed in the presence of Dmitry Medvedev and Indian prime-minister Manmohan Singh on December 16th 2011.

India has signed three contracts with Russia on delivery of 230 Su-30MKI fighters earlier. The value of purchased aircraft is assessed at around $8,5 billion. The amount of new agreement, signed on December 16th, was $3,4 billion. Taking into account these new deliveries, which should be completed in 2018, the fleet of Indian air forces will include 272 Su-30MKIs.

Meanwhile, Russia and India are negotiating on modernization of Su-30MKIs already operated by Indian air forces. President of Irkut Corporation, Alexey Fedorov, said in August 2011 that the modernization of these fighters will be carried out using technologies of the fifth-generation combat aircraft. Thus Su-30MKIs will be converted into “Super Sukhie”.
